Are you just graduating beauty school or an experienced professional thinking about your next job? Finding your salon home is the most crucial step for professional success. The list below is based on my years of experience and includes a few concrete steps you can take to positively further your career.
1. Volunteer for Everything
If there's an opportunity to volunteer, go ahead, and raise your hand. When you don't jump at the chance to work a photo shoot or work backstage with an incredible designer, it sends the message that you're not interested in expanding your skillset or your network.
I spent a good portion of my career giving things away, and I still do! I've spent years behind the chair and still doing people's hair for publicity/marketing to keep my work in front of different types of people. Creating as many touch points as possible with your client is key and volunteering/free work is one of the best ways to build relationships.
2. Do Your Research on Culture Fit
If you're invested in finding a salon family, then do your research to find the culture where you fit the best. It is important to remember that just because you're not the best fit at one salon, that doesn’t mean you aren’t the perfect fit at another salon. Culture is incredibly important, and it isn't a negative reflection of you that your skill set might be better suited to another place. If I interview someone, and they seem like an excellent fit for a different salon, I'm happy to connect them. What's important is putting yourself out there for any opportunities because you never know where one door might lead!
3. Creativity Can't Flourish in a Negative Environment
I've said it before, and I'll say it a thousand times - creativity can not flourish in a negative, unhappy atmosphere. It is super important that you work in a place where you feel good and supported.
4. Work for a Place that Shares Your Interests/Values
Are you interested in the wellness/beauty sector or a place highly concentrated on barbering? Or are thinking about working in spa that handles the entire beauty experience from nails to hair and on? There are so many different options in the beauty world that it can be overwhelming. Self-reflection is key here. Sitting down with yourself to figure out where you want to be long-term can be the best way to determine what sector of the industry makes the most sense for you.
5. Sacrifice is Necessary for Success
Don't be scared! I'm telling you this, so you're aware and expecting to give up things to achieve what you want. It doesn't have to be a painful process, but going in with your eyes open is essential. We have folks who drive thirty, forty minutes or more every day because they want to work in a place with strong ambition.
Of course, you can work at the salon with a better location or a better set-up for you, however; you do need to keep in mind whether that salon has the types of clients you want to work for long-term. Try to decide how you can build your business long term and then go with the salon that best fits those needs.
Most importantly, study the place you want the job, and don't give up until you get it. You deserve happiness, and if you put the work into your career, you can carve out the perfect path.
